STUDENT Leala Jacobs, 17, has designed the logo for Somerset Day 2017 following a competition at Richard Huish College, Taunton.

Leala's design was "fresh, distinct, easy to use and highly representative of the county’s values", according to judges, who said she used a combination of countryside elements such as food and farming.

Creative agency Thinking Juice worked with the 36 students taking part in the contest for the artwork ahead of Somerset Day on May 11.

Leala said: "It was a great experience to be able to work with industry professionals to develop my ideas - and even better to win the competition.

"I am clear now that I want to work in the creative industries, and this project has given me insight and confidence."

Matthew Williams, Leala’s graphic design teacher, said: “Richard Huish College particularly welcomes live projects and we were delighted to be approached by Passion for Somerset - organisers of Somerset Day - to help develop an identity for Somerset Day.

"This has been a great way for our students to work with potential employers - it gives them valuable commercial understanding, enriches their learning experience, will look great on their CVs and could potentially kickstart careers in the creative field."

Nigel Muers-Raby, chairman of Passion for Somerset, said: “We are delighted to have been able to work with Richard Huish College and the hugely talented group of students, and in particular we’d like to congratulate Leala for her winning design.

"Somerset Day is all about celebrating Somerset, its products and its people and what better way to do this than to work with the future generation of our great county, Somerset."
