A SCHOOL in Wellington has been told improvements must be made after a visit from Ofsted inspectors.

Court Fields School, in Mantle Street, received a “requires improvement” rating during its latest report, published on January 16.

The inspection took place at the end of November and looked into aspects of the school’s effectiveness.

The report scored the school with the “requires improvement” rating for effectiveness of leadership and management, quality of teaching, learning and assessment, personal development, behaviour and welfare and outcomes for pupils.

The school was put into special measures after it was rated “inadequate” in a damning report in January 2013, but came out of it 11 months later.

It then joined The Castle Partnership Trust, working with The Castle School, in Taunton, the following January.

Head teacher Rachael Bennet responded to the report, referring to the school’s positive aspects, including the raising standard of attainment and performance in subjects such as humanities.

She also responded to issues the report highlighted, including concern for disadvantaged pupils ‘lagging behind’ the rest.

She said: “The report gives a judgement that improvement is needed – which we accept.

“Issues raised are issues we know about and have to address.

“Small numbers of students in our school who are disadvantaged have not made sufficient progress – but the vast majority do.”

The report said: “The quality of teaching varies too much both between and within subjects.

“Although standards are rising overall, the achievement of disadvantaged pupils lags behind that of other pupils.

“Pupils with lower starting points do not make enough progress.

“Teaching is not yet enabling these pupils to achieve as well as they should.

“There is minor disruption in some of their lessons.

“Pupils say that this breaks their concentration and interrupts their learning.

“Some lower ability pupils are not achieving their potential because their writing skills are weak.”
