A PETITION to ban Donald Trump from visiting the UK in a state visit has reached more than one million signatures in response to the US leader's controversial immigration clampdown.

Somerset County Gazette:

The petition, launched on the UK Government's petition page on Sunday morning by Graham Guest, asks that President Trump be barred from making an official state visit "because it would cause embarassment to Her Majesty the Queen".

It reads: "Donald Trump's well documented misogyny and vulgarity disqualifies him from being received by Her Majesty the Queen or the Prince of Wales.

"Therefore during the term of his presidency Donald Trump should not be invited to the United Kingdom for an official State Visit."

As of 10am on Monday morning, the petition had surpassed the 100,000 signatures needed for a parliamentary debate, reaching more than one million signatures.

But Downing Street said its position had not changed on President Trump's visit as Prime Minister Theresa May came under pressure to axe the trip.

A Number 10 spokesman said: "An invitation has been extended and accepted."

Mr Trump signed an executive order halting the US refugee programme for 120 days on Friday, which indefinitely bans all Syrian refugees and suspends the entry of all nationals from Iraq, Iran, Yemen, Libya, Somalia and Sudan.

Somerset County Gazette:

Former Labour leader Ed Miliband tweeted that he and Iraqi-born MP Nadhim Zahawi would be calling for an "emergency" debate today on the matter.
