DARING Doric, the Houdini-like escapologist hound, found his own way home after a freedom dash from a Taunton police station in the week of February 7, 1992.

The shaggy dog story began when seven-year-old Doric ran into goal nets on the SCAT playing fields near his home and found himself hopelessly enmeshed.

His howls for help were heard by residents, who rand the police to complain, and officers released to dog before taking him to the police station.

But then, he was wrongly called a golden retriever when owners Patrick and Jane Henry of Bishops Hull rang to report a pedigree beagle missing, and they were told nobody had seen one.

Luckily, Doric took it upon himself to sort things out, and managed to escape from the prison. He was not seen again until the following night, when his owners found him on the doorstep.

Mr Henry said: "We weren't too worried at first because sometimes he goes off and sleeps in the barn.

"We were just pleased he was home, it was really amazing how he found his way back from the police station."
