A POPULAR animal sanctuary near Chard is slashing its entry prices in a bid to raise funds for charity and increase visitors during winter.

Ferne Animal Sanctuary, in Wambrook, will admit people into its grounds for £1 per person and will also host a series of special events throughout February.

The Sanctuary is also hoping families from across the area will visit the sanctuary over the half-term break.

Elaine Hayes, chief executive of Ferne Animal Sanctuary, said it was introducing the cut-price admission fee to help boost fundraising and numbers during the month.

She said: “The Sanctuary is a great place to visit at this time of year for a day out, winter’s walk, or just for a nice cuppa and treat in our café.

“It’s quite sheltered with lots of opportunities to spot a variety of wildlife and animals to say hello to, which everybody loves!

"However, February can be a tricky month for families, so we thought we’d offer a special entry price so that everyone can enjoy the Sanctuary all year round.”

As part of the offering, families can take part in the Nature Trail through the woods, organised by the sanctuary, or take a walk around its grounds, which are home to more than 300 animals.

If the weather is bad, there are also a host of family-friendly activities taking place indoors, including an arts and crafts section, plus a café for people to enjoy some homemade snacks.

The sanctuary also plans to sign up every person who visits the centre over February to the free email newsletter, so they can keep people informed of all the activities that go on at the centre.

Ferne Animal Sanctuary is a registered charity and relies on the support of the public and dedicated volunteers to continue its vital work, with funds raised during February going straight back into the charity.
