A 31-YEAR-OLD man who was caught trying to smuggle £1,800 worth of drugs into music festival at Butlins has been spared a jail sentence.

Edward Oliver, 31, of Leyton Grove, London appeared before Taunton Crown Court on Friday and admitted four charges of possession with intent to supply of cocaine, MDMA, Ketamine and Tamazepan.

William Hunter, prosecuting, said that when Oliver's car was stopped by security as he tried to enter the music festival on March 11 last year, a digital scale, bags of white powder and bottles of ketamine were found underneath a wheel arch.

Once the full car had been searched they found 575ml of ketamine, 30g of cocaine, 60 MDMA tablets and a further 760g of ketamine.

Mr Hunter said the purity of the drugs was very high.

Oliver's phone was seized and there were messages found relating to security on the site, Mr Hunter said.

Defending, Partick Mason said: "Mr Oliver self-referred himself to hospital and has managed to put his drugs and alcohol problems behind him."

He described Oliver as a constructive member of society, who had a first class honours degree and before was employed in marketing.

Sentencing, Judge David Evans said: "I am not going to patronise you, you knew theses drugs were against the law and selling them even more so.

"You knew that at the time, and you went ahead and did it anyway," he said.

He sentenced Oliver to two years in prison for the two Class A charges and 18 months for the remaining charges to run concurrently, but suspended to two years.

He was also ordered to carry out 120 hours of unpaid work and to pay £580 costs, plus a victim surcharge.
