THEY think it's all over ... it is for now.

A team of dedicated men have rounded off their weightloss football league having shed more than 48 stone in just 14 weeks.

The players, who are all part of the Bridgwater Man v Fat football league, rounded off their second season having notched some impressive goals on the pitch, and some brilliant losses off it.

Since the second league started in October, the 62 have lost a combined 308 kilograms off their waistline, equating to 48 stone 7 lbs, plus a combined 68 inches from their waistlines.

Goals are scored both on the pitch in a six-a-side match, plus those losing weight off the pitch also gaining goals, which are then added together for the final score, meaning it is as important to lose weight off the pitch as scoring goals on it.

The second season finished last Monday, with the blue team, aptly named (K) FC, finishing off as champions on the pitch, winning a tight final game 1-0 against Altered Images, although they comprehensively won off the pitch, nine to four.

Roger Smith, who organises the league, praised all the players for their weightloss.

He said: “It’s fantastic to see the remarkable achievements made by the guys over the last 14 weeks, with improvements not just in their weight but also their general health and fitness as well.

"The main part of this league is to not only enjoy football in a friendly manner, but to also lose weight and make simple and sustainable changes to people's lifestyles to allow them to lead healthier lives, and to lose more weight.

"I want as many men as possible benefit from the scheme and look forward to seeing you when our 3rd league starts next month.”

At the final game last week, the champions received their title from Cllr Gill Slocombe, portfolio holder for health and wellbeing at Sedgemoor District Council.

Cllr Slocombe said: "As the portfolio holder for health and wellbeing, I was extremely honoured to have been asked to present the trophy to the winning team and to the individual player.

"I believe they are all winners and should be so proud of themselves, it’s an amazing accomplishment.

"To lose, together, more than 48 stone in just 14 weeks in such an enjoyable way exceeds anything that has been done before.

"Sedgemoor District Council has also funded them under the small community grants under health and wellbeing in recognition of the work they are doing.

"I have agreed to support them in any way possible for the future and special congratulations must go to Roger Smith for this tremendous achievement."

The league is now recruiting players for its third league, which starts on Monday, March 6, and for more information visit manvfatfootball.org
