PROPOSALS for a multi-million pound development on a derelict former cattle market site are set to be unveiled shortly.

Developer St Modwen has lodged a planning application for shops, homes, leisure and employment buldings at Firepool, off Priory Bridge Road, Taunton.

It comes eight months after Taunton Deane Borough Council planners threw out a previous application for the site.

The outline plans have been drawn up after lengthy talks with landowners the Deane.

Council leader Cllr John Williams said “I am very pleased that St Modwen have embraced concerns raised by members and officers and have returned with a significantly improved proposal which is in for validation now.

"Subject to it being acceptable it will appear on the Taunton Deane website shortly and I encourage residents to review it to see what is planned.

"Taunton is an ambitious town and Firepool is a key part of our growth agenda.

"Not many towns will ever have the opportunity to deliver a project of this scale and importance right in the heart of the town which is estimated to be a £105 million investment delivering in the order of 1,500 jobs.

"It is vital that we get it right in terms of design, links and mix of development, and, at the same time, ensure that the project works commercially and can be delivered.

"In my view this new proposal strikes that balance and will create an exciting and vibrant new area that will be part of the town and not separate and that will make a huge contribution to its success.”
