TAUNTON Deane Borough Council has received a revised outline planning application for development on land at Firepool in Taunton.

The application is for a mix of uses including restaurants on the waterfront, cinema, hotel, supermarket and retail units, offices and new homes.

An application was first submitted at the end of 2015 and was considered by the council’s planning committee last summer but was refused in line with officer recommendations.

Concerns centred on layout and design, rather the development and the mix of uses.

Since then the council has worked with developers St Modwen to address the issues, particularly those regarding design.

“Firepool’s regeneration remains the council’s priority. We have come a long way since development on the site was proposed and a great deal of necessary preparatory work has been carried out,” said a council spokesman.

“The development that is proposed is significant and that means we have to carry out complex, and often specialised technical work that takes time.”

The applicant, regeneration specialist St Modwen, has submitted a range of supporting documents which are being assessed by the borough council’s planning department and statutory consultees such as highways, the Environment Agency and Natural England.

The public has until May 25 to comment on the application – this can be done by letter, by email or online here.
