SEDGEMOOR FM DJ Dave Englefield discusses how questions are only when you know the answer, and how its easy to assume people know things that seem obvious to us.

Things are always easy if you know the answer or know how to do something. This is why, for example, chef’s always make cooking some incredible concoction look really easy to make and it looks impressive, although the truth is that we are never quite able to match up to what they achieve.

The important thing though is things can look or appear easy if you know how something works or how to achieve something.

Why am I talking about this? I came across an elderly gentleman, who was visiting the area, staring at the canal and looking very confused. Being the friendly sort I asked if he was okay, to which he replied he was fine but could I possibly tell him what time the tide was due in as the water didn’t appear to be moving.

I patiently explained the canal/river difference and he went on his way a little happier. I think we can sometimes be guilty of assuming that because we know something, others do too. That is not always the case.

I’ve had another week of facial amnesia. Do you know what I mean? You’ll be watching a film or a programme and a character will appear on the screen and you’ll say to someone watching with you, 'we’ve seen him/her in something' but you can’t remember what.

At that point they start wracking their brains as well because it’s then bugging them as to why they seem familiar, ten minutes later you are looking them up online to answer your question and then you realise you’ve missed a chunk of the programme you were watching and no longer have any idea of what’s going on! Thank goodness we can re-watch things.
