THE sun shone brightly on the bowlers at Eastover Park who attended the club's recent open day.

New and existing members were treated to a pork and turkey snack supplied by Court Farm Butchers and a friendly game of bowls followed.

Club secretary Rod Stoodley said: "Many old joints required a bit of loosening, but once the bar was brought into the equation you could see noticeable improvements!"

The open day truly got under way with a traditional 'spider' bowl, and the donations collected will go to charity.

A two hour bowling and training session followed in the sunshine and those who were trying out the game for the first time had an enjoyable introduction to the game.

At the end of the day club chairman Anne Moore thanked all of the people who attended and congratulated members who had worked in recent weeks to decorate and prepare the club.

Mr Stoodley added: "There is still time to join this club and the offer of three months of free bowling still exists and there are no age restrictions, we welcome young and old and will encourage those who want to give the sport a try."

Club supporters H. Biffen & Sons were on hand to announce the presentation of two trophies for the clubs annual Jubilee Trophies event held every July.

The club has recently installed central heating in the clubhouse, allowing it to be used all-year-round as opposed to just in the summer.

Chairman Anne Moore said: “It has made a tremendous amount of difference already – before we used to come to committee meetings in the winter and would be sat in our overcoats. Now we can host bingo and events and people can just come and socialise here.

“It was made possible by our committed members, a grant from Sedgemoor District Council and great support from local businesses including H.Biffen & Sons, The Old Vicarage and Court Farm Butchers at Puriton.”
