STUDENTS who have contributed to Haygrove School’s sports success this year were invited to the annual Sports Assembly to celebrate their achievements together.

A boy and a girl from each year group were named ‘Sports Personality of the Year’ and presented with trophies in recognition of the contribution they had made to the sporting life of the school.

In each sport student leaders, coaches and captions were applauded for their dedication and team spirit, and 29 senior students were awarded an Honours medal.

This year two teams were named jointly as ‘Team of the Year’: the U16 Boys Rugby Team and the U16 Girls Netball Team.

Both have won their sports’ 2017 Somerset County Cup after beating the local area schools and this success has only added to the array of cups and trophies both squads have secured for Haygrove over the last five years.

During this school year, Haygrove students have represented their school in a huge variety of sports including hockey, athletics, cross-country, rounders, basketball, netball, football, gymnastics, table tennis, trampolining and rugby, and in many cases have gone on to compete at county, regional and national level.

In addition Haygrove’s sports leaders have supported primary school children at a range of festivals held at Haygrove School with the aim of developing a life-long involvement in sport and physical activity from a young age.

“This has been another great year for Haygrove sports,” said head of physical education Mr Gray. “Our students’ enthusiasm and commitment is amazing and presumably highly contagious; every year we have more and more talented and determined youngsters who are willing to step up to get involved in school sports.”
