ORGANISERS and volunteers from Active Living groups across Somerset came together for a celebratory Jamboree at Bridgwater’s Canalside Conference Centre.

The event, organised by ‘CSW You Can Do’, brought together volunteer organisers from the Active Living network.

The Jamboree was a chance to share good practice, hear from a range of speakers, including Somerset County Council, Devon and Somerset Fire & Rescue Service, British Red Cross and a host of other services.

At its core was the chance to celebrate the work carried out by Active Living across the county and to focus on the themes of staying healthy, keeping safe, and remaining independent, as well as pressing issues such as finance and transport.

Tim Warren, You Can Do manager, said: “This year’s Jamboree was a great success. One of its aims was to get people sharing ideas and it was great to hear the room buzzing with conversations about the activities and events, this was a perfect example of how community spirit can be a force for good’’.

Somerset’s Active Living groups provide people above the age of 50 with the opportunity to take part in local activities, enjoy the company of others, and access of information about keeping well and active.

Groups are a ‘hub’ providing a café style environment as well as being a source of information about preventative services and activities for older people.

These groups aim to help thousands of people across Somerset and continue to make a positive impact on issues such as isolation, independence and social inclusion.

Denis Cottle of West Buckland friendship Group, who chaired the event’s question time, said: “Everyone I’ve spoken to enjoyed themselves and found it a great way to make new contacts.

"It’s been a celebration of a great achievement and the provision of a valuable service. We’ve all found the day very informative and enjoyable”.

A Somerset County Council spokesperson added: “This event was yet another great success and celebration of Active Living Centres, to help and support people aged over 50.

"They are great places to learn new things, make new friends and get involved in your community. Last year, more than 2,000 people went to an active living group every month and there are over 500 volunteers who help run them. More volunteers are always welcome.”
