THE main temporary one-way traffic system around Wylds Road, The Drove and Bristol Road in Bridgwater will be removed by mid-June as work continues ahead of schedule on two key junction improvements.

EDF Energy, which is carrying out the upgrade, said the work would be finished ahead of the original 29 weeks forecast, with crucial resurfacing work due to take place next week and in June.

Once the resurfacing is complete and the traffic lights on the Bristol Road junction with The Drove have been tested, the main one-way system will be lifted.

However, temporary traffic management will remain in place at the Wylds Road and The Drove junction.

The northbound ‘no entry’ sign near the East Quay Medical Centre will also remain in place until all works have been completed.

Lucy Holt, EDF Energy’s project manager, said: “We are undertaking resurfacing work, as well as working with Somerset County Council to do resurfacing on The Drove and Bristol Road while the traffic management system is in force.  We will be carrying out the work at night to minimise the impact on traffic flows.

“Diversions will be in place and we will do our best to maintain access for local residents and businesses in the vicinity.”

Resurfacing is scheduled for Bristol Road and The Drove from Monday, May 22, for eight nights and on Wylds Road and The Drove from June 12 for seven nights.  Further night working is anticipated at Wylds Road and The Drove but no further road closures will be required.

EDF Energy is carrying out the upgrade as part of a £20 million package of local road improvements association with its Hinkley Point C project.

Ms Holt added: “We are making good progress on the improvements and will complete the work ahead of schedule.

“The new junctions will be operational by the end of June and I would like to thank everyone for their patience while the resurfacing and remaining works are being carried out.”
