WIMBLEBALL Sailability has celebrated the launch of their new power boat which is designed to take people with disabilities in wheelchairs on to the lake.

The boat was recently purchased with grants from Sport England and Somerset Community Foundation with support from the Somerset Masons Fund and the group’s own fundraising efforts.

Jo Smith founded the charity in 2009 with the idea to support disabled people to access the water at Wimbleball Lake.

A dedicated and enthusiastic group of club members volunteer to help those with disabilities have the experience and enjoyment of going afloat in a sailing boat.

Between May and September, subject to favourable weather conditions, volunteers take people for a sail on Wimbleball Lake. If they develop skills, they are also able to sail on their own in specially designed or adapted boats. A safety boat is always on standby.

The club also has a hoist by the water's edge, to transfer sailors on and off the boats and fully accessible toilet facilities are available at the Sailing Club.

Representing Somerset Community Foundation, trustee Jan Ross said that, in spite of the wind and cold on the day of the launch, it was wonderful to see so many people able to enjoy such a unique experience. The club is very popular and many Care Homes bring their residents to enjoy participating in the sport.

Wimbleball Sailability has a team of volunteers who operate from May to October, on Wednesdays and Fridays. They have boats for wheelchair users and safe sailing dinghies for those who wish sail, catering for most disabilities.

Family members and carers are welcome to join in with the sailing or just relax and enjoy the lake and its facilities.
