A man has died after being tasered by police in Falmouth yesterday evening.

Police were called to Langton Road at around 9pm following reports of concerns for the welfare of a man, and arrived to find a male with a knife.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the man walking around last night, cutting himself with the knife, and police later confirmed that he had sustained self inflicted injuries.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: "Due to the unfolding dynamic incident, police deployed a Taser."

The man was taken to the Royal Cornwall Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Police say the man's next of kin have been informed, and the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

The spokesperson added: "Devon and Cornwall Police are co-operating with the IPCC who are independently investigating this incident, therefore we are currently unable to comment further while further investigations are ongoing."

An IPCC spokesperson said: “We are independently investigating police contact with a man prior to his death in Falmouth yesterday evening.

“Devon and Cornwall Police were called to reports of a man with a knife at around 9pm in Langton Road. The IPCC has been told that during the incident that followed the man sustained self-inflicted knife injuries, and was taken to hospital where he subsequently died.

“The investigation follows a mandatory referral from Devon and Cornwall Police and IPCC investigators have been deployed.”

Langton Road currently remains cordoned as police attempt to ascertain a clear picture of what happened.
