A SWEET shop in Taunton that had to close due to flooding after a downpour of rain and hail is set to reopen.

The Sweet Shop on East Reach was left damaged following the bad weather last Friday (May 19).

The carpet was left saturated at the doorway and a large puddle had formed in the shop, which Lord Miles Parker, who runs the shop, thinks was to blame.

He said: "It was early on that evening that we got the phone call to tell us that there was water flooding into the shop.

"We arrived some 20 minutes later to find the landlord and his wife and a couple of friends were hard at work trying to stem the flow of the waters.

"We opened the door to the shop to find the carpet was saturated at the doorway and a large puddle had formed in the shop.

"I  thought I'd escaped quite lightly at that point, and it wasn't until we ventured further in that we found that the water had also come in from the rear door of the shop and there was a lot of water gathered behind the bar."

The shop has now been cleaned and repaired and will now reopen on Monday (May 29) at noon.

Lord Parker added: "We’d like to thank all our customers for their kind words and support during this difficult time."
