A PRESCHOOL in Wellington has been told to improve in its latest Ofsted report.

Wellington Community Playgroup Pre-school was rated as “requires improvement” during its latest inspection that took place on June 20.

The report was published on Monday, July 10.

The preschool, based at the Wellington Youth Centre, was rated as “good” in three areas and “requires improvement” in one. The inspection rating has stayed the same from the preschool’s previous inspection.

Elaine Douglas, Ofsted inspector, said: “Although there are clear recruitment and vetting processes, the management committee is not thorough in ensuring it keeps records of staff’s suitability to work with children.

“This is a breach of requirement.

“Staff do not plan an environment that represents all children’s backgrounds to help them develop a positive awareness of their own similarities and differences.

“Children do not have consistent opportunities to learn how to use books to find information.”

The report highlight the preschool’s strengths including its good relationship with parents and outside agencies.

Ms Douglas added: “The manager leads a team of staff who work well together and provide good role models for children.

“Children enjoy their time at preschool and they have strong relationships and learn to manage their feelings and behave well.

“All children make good progress in their learning and development from their starting points.”

Carole Taylor, pre-school manager, said: "We were very disappointed with our result, but unfortunately the main improvement was out of our control.

"However where my team of practitioners are responsible we were pleased to maintain our good standard in our quality of teaching and assessment and personal development, behaviour and welfare.

"I am currently reviewing and improving all our policies and procedures, and these will be implemented in our new September term."
