THE Sedgemoor Chess Club has announced its new venue, after securing a grant to help find a new more family-friendly venue.

For a number of years the club had been based at the Admiral's Landing in Bridgwater, but from September the club will be moving to the Wembdon Parish Centre.

The club chairman Chris Mckinley said: "We are very grateful to the council for this grant, and we hope our new venue will help the club grow its membership and attract new players of all ages, and we want to encourage younger players to come and give the game a try."

Sedgemoor Chess Club plays in the Somerset Chess Association Leagues in the second and third divisions.

Last season the team were second division winners and joint winners of the third division.

Matches are played on a home and away basis and involves games against teams from Taunton, Weston-Super-Mare, Yeovil, Glastonbury, Chard, Wellington, Trowbridge, Frome.

The club meets on Monday evenings at 7.30pm, with the first session taking place on September 11,

with the chess season running from September until late April.

Mr Mckinley said: "I would describe the game as fun that can be played slowly or very fast. It has endless possible combinations of moves and will make you think and plan. Imagine that the pieces are two opposing armies that you must lead into battle and capture their king."

The club were awarded the £400 grant from Sedgemoor District Council at the end of May.
