AN empty plot on the Isleport Business Park could be transformed into a 75-bedroom hotel after plans were submitted to build a Travelodge on the site.

The proposal, submitted by ERC Developments Ltd, show plans for the hotel along with 75 parking spaces, an integral bar and cafe, as well as bin and cycle storage on land to the east of Bennett Road.

If approved, the new hotel will be on land adjacent to the new Aldi superstore, which was approved by Sedgemoor District Council in May.

The planning application says the scheme would bring benefits to the area.

“The proposed hotel offers the opportunity for an identified development site to be brought into positive use while generating investment and jobs within the local area,” it said.

Mike Murphy, chairman of Highbridge Chamber of Trade, said he welcomed the plans.

“This is a hotel chain based mainly on internet booking,” he said.

“With access from both sides of the busy M5 it could be very successful.
“The latest design includes a cafe and bar to encourage guests to stay in the hotel.

“However, adventurous guests will have a wide choice of takeaways, restaurants and pub food nearby which, apart from additional jobs, can only be a benefit to the local economy.”

Somerset County Gazette:

However, he did warn of possible ramifications should more development be allowed around the plot.

“A McDonald’s is also being talked about and my only concern is combined with the new Aldi supermarket currently being built, this could be the beginning of out-of-town retail development along the A38,” Mr Murphy added.

“If this is allowed it would certainly damage town centre business.”
