A NEW convenience store could be coming to Bridgwater after plans were unveiled to renovate a historic pub.

SEP Properties submitted plans to Sedgemoor District Council to turn The Bridgwater Squib on West Street into a convenience store on July 26 and to extend the building and create a store room.

If approved, the building will have its existing window bays replaced and a rear single storey extension will be built to provide a more uniform shape for the purposes of a convenience store layout, offering space for a store room.

A spokesman for SEP Properties said: "The site was used as a Public House, the current climate has meant that the public house has ceased trading and subsequently has been acquired by SEP Properties.

"This proposal is to extend the existing footprint slightly so that the public house can be let as a convenience store as this is required in the local area.

"There already has been interest from various parties to let this space.

"The new convenience store would require internal remodelling, the extent of this remodelling is not seen to be detrimental to the existing structure as there is no historic impact the site has.

"The site benefits from off street car park and off street loading area.

"The entrance to the Convenience Store is proposed to be located on West Street.

"The anticipated frequency of traffic movement in and out of the site is not deemed to be any greater than the existing use.

"Indeed this is deemed to be a steady flow rather than peaks and troughs."

Comments are welcome on the application until August 28 after which the plans will be considered by Sedgemoor District Council.
