A VEHICLE ploughed into the central reservation and reportedly caught fire on the M5 near Taunton earlier.
Firefighters were called to the incident northbound between Junctions 25 and 26 (Huntworth) at noon.
A Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "On arrival crews discovered that there had been a road traffic collision where a vehicle had hit the central reservation but had then been dragged across to the hard shoulder by the Highways Agency.
"All persons were free and clear of the vehicle. Crews made the vehicle safe."
The Highways Agency warned of long delays, although all lanes were later re-opened.
