DOZENS of people crowded round to watch a dramatic rescue by firefighters in Taunton town centre this afternoon (Friday).
One of the crew was lowered over The Bridge on a rope to save a pigeon that had become stuck in netting.
Firefighter Daz Ayres managed to free the distressed, injured bird shortly before 3pm and it was then taken away by the RSPCA.
He said: "I was lowered down on safety at height equipment.
"When I got to the bird, there was another little bird with it that flew away.
""One of its legs was trapped in netting and also became wedged in a very small gap.
"There was a bit of blood and it had a damaged wing and a damaged leg.
"My colleagues lowered a box to put him in and pull him up to safety."
The RSPCA's Jo Daniel with firefighters and the rescued pigeon.
RSPCA inspector Jo Daniel said: "We were called by a member of the public.
"The pigeon is a living thing so we requested the assistance of the fire service."
The bird was taken to the RSPCA wildlife centre at West Hatch.
