THE opening day of Somerset County Cricket Club's second XI match against Essex had to be abandoned after seagulls caused thousands of pounds worth of damage to the ground's cover sheets, leaving the pitch waterlogged.

The team was due to play Essex at Taunton Vale on Monday (August 21) but were forced to abandon the match due to the outfield being wet.

The county cricket club's groundsman, Rob Hake, tweeted on Monday and explained seagulls attacking the sheets had caused thousands of pounds worth of damage and left the pitch covered in water.

Fortunately, the match started today at 11am and went off without a hitch, with Peter Trego opening the bowling.

Somerset County Cricket Club has been contacted for comment but as of yet has not responded.
