Droves of people will be giving it welly at what can only be described as one of the region’s most quirky events.

Devon has the tar barrels, Gloucestershire has cheese rolling and Somerset has the World Wellington Boot Throwing Championships which returns for the ninth time on Saturday, September 9.

The event will be held in Wellington and the mayor Councillor Gary James will introduce the town’s majorettes troupe to mark the start at 12pm.

Judging for the dog show starts at 1.30pm and medals, trophies and shields will be awarded to the welly throwing winners at 5pm.

Wellington Experience is hosting the event and a spokesman said: “The ‘Welly Boot’ is a family fun day with lots to do and see and doesn’t cost the earth.

“The aim of this event is to put Wellington on the map. It is free entry into the event with low charge for entering the competition.”

This year’s raffle profits will be given to the Wellington Children's Centre.
