Firefighters have been working through the night tackling a blaze at a Somerset landfill site.

Smoke could be seen from miles around after fire broke out at the Dimmer Landfill site, near Castle Cary, at about 4.35pm yesterday.

This picture of huge plumes of smoke was posted on social media by Castle Cary Fire Station yesterday.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service said:  “Crews have been making steady progress through the night. The high volume pump has been in use, pumping water from the River Brue.

The fire service received a number of calls to the fire and one engine from Castle Cary was initially sent to the scene.

Back up was called upon and crews from Wincanton, Yeovil, Shepton Mallet and Somerton, as well as specialist appliances from Street and Bridgwater soon arrived.

The spokesman added: “The incident was escalated to 12 pumps and the high volume pump from Taunton.  Dorset and Wiltshire are also providing appliances to assist with this incident.”

About 100m by 100m of landfill was on fire and the emergency services advised all residents to keep doors and windows closed.
