TWO big changes are said to coming to Taunton this autumn - but no firm dates have been confirmed.

Saturday Park and Ride services in Taunton are set to be axed by Somerset County Council (SCC) this autumn, while Taunton Deane Borough Council (TDBC) is planning the trial period for pedestrianisation to some Taunton streets that is set to take place this season.

The closure of the Saturday bus service was announced at the end of July in a bid to meet SCC's 18million savings plan.

A date hasn't been set but it was originally stated that it would be in the autumn.

A SCC spokesman said: “At the moment we do not have a confirmed date from which the Saturday Park and Ride service will stop running.

"Discussions are continuing with providers and partners about how we can limit the impacts and what the options are for running the service in support of major events and Christmas shopping”.

Elsewhere in the town, plans to make certain streets more people-friendly are afoot.

An 18-month trial to bar motorists from three streets is set to start this autumn.

The plan would see East Street closed to all traffic apart from buses and cyclists, Hammet Street closed to vehicles during the day, and St James Street between North Street and Lower Middle Street pedestrianised.

A spokesman for TDBC said: "The possible roll-out of the trial was autumn – at present the feedback from the various consultations are being analysed.

"One that’s complete we would hope to be able to be more specific on the timing of the trial."

Plans to impliment changes to Somerset's bin collections to every three-weeks are also uncertain, as no date has been confirmed.
