MESSAGES informing passengers at Taunton Station could be easier to understand in future.

Great Western Railway has applied for permission to install two radio microphone antennae with appropriate fittings and fixings at the station.

The company needs to inform Taunton Deane Borough Council as the station is a Grade II listed building.

It has written to reassure the council that the antennae will be suspended from the existing containment and have no impact on the fabric of then building.

A statement with the application says: "It is considered that these works do not detract from either the heritage, historic, or site context of Taunton Station; or otherwise significantly impact on its appearance."

An officer statement to the council says: "A Great Western franchise obligation is for the incumbent train operating company to enhance the quality, timeliness, and accuracy of information to all members of the public using or meeting trains at Taunton Station.

"The proposed works are required to discharge this obligation.

"Additional benefits sought include reduced operational and maintenance costs."
