A DOG walker who found a shock discovery on a Somerset beach says the item was a male body part.

Julie Edwards was walking with her dog, a Bassat Hound called Molly, on the beach on September 25, on what she believed was a normal day.

Until Molly, the dog known to roll around in unpleasant substances found on the beach, found the item.

Julie said: "I wasn't sure what it was at first but I knew it must be something unpleasant as that's all my dog rolls in I was shocked when I realised what it was as you don't expect to find that's on a beach."

Ms Edwards, who is from Worcestershire but has a caravan in Brean, says she walks on the beach every day when she is visiting the county - but admits she stayed away for a few days to recover from the ordeal.

"I'm always foraging on the beach for driftwood and unusual things but didn't expect that," she added.

"I didn't go back on beach for a few days.

"I showed the beach warden the picture I had taken and he came back with me he made the area safe then called the police.

"I do not know what else it could be it definitely looked like intact penis and testicles."

Avon and Somerset Police attended the scene and closed the beach for some time while they searched the area.

Officers have not confirmed what the discovery is.

A spokesman said: "The matter has been referred to the coroner and we are carrying out enquiries on behalf of the coroner to determine the nature of the item.

“It was first reported to us as a body part, but investigations have revealed that it might not be a human body part.

“It could be another animal, or even a mineral.

“It will take time to figure out what it is exactly.”
