THE pop group a-ha can be described as ‘Norwegian cool’.

The band comprising of lead vocalist Morten Harket, guitarist Pal Waaktaar-Savoy and keyboardist Magne Furuholmen, started out in 1982 hit the music scene in the UK like a pop maelstrom and hit the top ten with hits such as Take Me, The sun always shines of tv, train of thought, Hunting high and low, I’ve been losing you, Cry Wolf and The Living Daylights (The theme tune of the James Bond movie of the same name).

Their reputation is the past few years has soared from just being a band for teenage girls in the 1980s to one which is lauded by the like of Chris Martin from Coldplay, Adam Clayton from U2, Keane, Sarah Brightman and Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young.

Even Christina Aguilera and Pitbull performed the song “Feel This Moment”

which contains sampling of a-ha’s “Take On Me” live at the MGM Grand during the 2013 Billboard Music Awards with a surprise appearance from Morten Harket.

Speaking about this Pal Waaktaar-Savoy said: “It is nice to meet people who have told us our music has been a major part of their lives and has meant so much to them.

“People tell us how much our songs meant to them and it makes me happy people are still listening to the music.

Somerset County Gazette:

"We took a hiatus in the 1990s for five to seven years and when we came back everyone was saying good things about us.”

Next Summer, a-ha are taking to the road and will be out and about for their UK full electric outdoor tour performing some of their biggest hits.

The good news for a-ha fans in Somerset is they are coming her as they will be performing at Huish Park, Yeovil on Saturday, June 9.

Guitarist Pal Waaktaar-Savoy from the multi-Platinum selling Norwegian trio said doing their latest album Acoustic Hits – MTV Unplugged was ‘old school’ as they were all in the same room and everyone in the group was in synch with each other.

Giving his insight into what music meant to him, Pal said: “Music is something I have been doing since I was nine-years-old and started writing songs.

“It is something I have never stopped doing and has always been there for me.

"If I am not doing anything todo with music them I get restless.

“It is not so much and entertainment it is more about being an expression.

"There is something about music which can be very powerful and it can change people’s moods.

“Music is something which I cannot imagine it not being there, it is what I have always done.

"I have never had a job and have never done anything else.

“What I am supposed to do become a tennis player?

"There is something very exciting when it happens and you write a song but you can wait months for this to happen.

Somerset County Gazette:

“Recording takes time as I have to get the feeling I had when I wrote the song as I cannot get what I hear in my head onto the record.

“It is a question of getting the same feeling which I got when I first wrote the song.”

The group have been together off and on for 35 years and in Pal’s words have ‘been leaning on each other for a long time.

That leaning has made each of them comfortable to be with each other on stage and in the recording studio.

The trio have gone on to release ten studio and two live albums plus their latest highly acclaimed MTV Unplugged album.

Speaking about this album which was released in October, Pal said: “This went very well and beyond my expectations and it was an enjoyable experience.

“We did two shows and and that made up the album. We had the opportunity to use string players and instruments and we want to keep them for the Summer tour.”

Loyal MTV fans have year on year voted Take on Me in their ‘Top 10 Best Music Videos’.

The 2018 summer outdoor tour will see the pop idols do what they do best, performing their hearts out to highly appreciative fans, and by contrast to the latest acoustic album, will see them bring a full electric set to carefully selected UK venues - promising their biggest hits and of course new material.

The trio will be joined by a full new band including a string section for what is set to be a stellar summer evening playlist.

Morten Harket said “We do feel a close affinity to the UK and our fans there. We have also always seen fans travel to our shows to and within the UK and welcome all.

"It’s exciting to play outdoors and take our music to locations which are not traditional Arena touring places.

As ever we always want to do things in a new way, to keep things exciting for our fans.

"We are very much looking forward to playing in Yeovil in June.”
