TAUNTON Deane will once again be without an official council Christmas lights switch-on event.

Instead, the mayor of Taunton Councillor Hazel Prior-Sankey will join shoppers to switch on the town’s tree at an event organised by the Orchard Shopping Centre on Thursday, November 30.

The borough council decided last year that it would not be hosting an official event in efforts to spread the festivities throughout the run up to the big day. It is following suit this year as officials announce plans for 2017.

The tree will once again be placed outside the Market House. It has been donated by Langford Lakes and the Taunton Farmers’ Market. The lights will be provided by Go Create and picket fencing donated by Westwood Fencing.

The council hopes to encourage residents to shop locally by offering free parking in seven town centre car parks on the Friday and Saturday afternoons before Christmas.

There will be free parking from midday on Friday and Saturday, December 22 and 23, at the Canon Street, Castle Street, Enfield, High Street, Orchard, Tangier and Wood Street car parks.

Cllr Roger Habgood, executive councillor for planning and transportation, said: “We hope that people will take advantage of this generous car parking offer over one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.

“I would encourage people to come to Taunton, save on their parking and spend their money at the tills instead.”

The Orchard Shopping Centre switch-on will also feature performances from Taunton’s Got Talent finalists.

Late night shopping will continue on Thursdays, December 7, 14 and 21, with some shops opening late on Friday and Saturday, December 22 and 23.

Other concerts and markets will also take place including carols in Vivary Park.

Cllr Mark Edwards, deputy leader of the council, said: “I thank everyone who is contributing to the Christmas programme this year with events, sponsorship and support.

“It is our privilege to work with businesses and individuals who are keen to promote Taunton over the festive season.

“I hope our combined efforts will be enjoyed by all ages,” he added.
