MOTORISTS experienced long delays after a car burst into flames on Station Road.

The incident happened at around 5.40pm today (November 20).

Witnesses say the car burst into flames and people ran to safety as the car was engulfed by fire.

A witness who withheld their name, said: “I spoke to the driver and they said they were giving a friend a lift when they said they could smell burning plastic, the next thing they knew the steering wheel was on fire.”

It is believed all of the passengers were free from the vehicle when it caught fire but it is not yet known if anyone was injured.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said: “Fire control sent one fire appliance from Taunton to Station Road after a report of a car on fire.

”On arrival crews saw that there were smoke and flames issuing from the car.

“The vehicle that was on the public highway was well alight and crews got to work using two breathing apparatus sets and two hose reel jets.

“Police were also in attendance for traffic control.

”The car was found to be severely damaged by fire once extinguished.”

Traffic is delayed on Station Road and the street is engulfed in thick black smoke.
