A MAJOR engineering scheme to reduce the flood risk in North Curry could cause traffic disruption for up to a month.

The main road through the village has historically suffered from flooding during times of heavy rain.

The work, which is due to start on Monday, January 8, will improve drainage by adding and upgrading gullies near Stoke Road and along The Pavement.

Somerset County Council has worked closely with the community to design a scheme which has been split into phases to minimise disruption as much as possible.

The first phase is due to start on Monday, January 8 and take approximately four weeks. During the phase there will be temporary traffic lights in place along The Pavement. The Shambles will also be closed.

Phase 2a will also start on Monday, January 8 and run concurrently to Phase 1. This will involve a closure of Stoke Road for approximately three weeks between 9am-3pm. Outside these hours the road will be open with a give and take system in place to allow vehicles to pass safely through the works area.
Phase 2b will take place immediately after Phase 2a has finished and will see White Street closed from the junction of Stoke Road to Morris Way. 

Cllr John Woodman, Somerset County Council’s cabinet member for Highways, said: “This road is prone to flooding and I’m pleased we’re improving the old drainage system which will make a huge difference in helping water flow away during periods of wet weather. 

“Apologies for any disruption which may be caused. We know this road is well used and have worked closely with the local community to design a scheme which will minimise the overall impact as much as possible.”
