THE committee of Taunton-based County Gazette-backed Somerset Unit for Radiotherapy led the way in fundraising for the charity this week.

A week-long raffle they held at the Beacon Centre cancer unit at Musgrove Park Hospital - which it helps equip - made £1,025.

Other contributions included £735 from Mr and Mrs Prowse, of Bridgwater, from the sale of cards; £40 from wig stands made by a group of Somerset Woodturners and donated to the Beacon Centre; and £20 from the sale of some donated hand made wooden stepladders.

There was £35 from Bernard and Mary Splisbury, of Burnham-on-Sea raised through golden wedding anniversary donations, while they also gave £10.80 in 5p coins.

Margaret Hart, of Bridgwater, presented SURE with £50; an alms collection from Wellington School Somerset Lodge made £57.50.

Collection pots totalled £38.37 at GW Hurleys, in Burnham; £4.97 at the Crusty Cob Bakers, Burnham, Other 5p donations amounted to £1.95 from Jean Leeming; £1 from Rita Pointing, Donald Reason, of Galmington, handed over £47 from a collection he made; Andrew and Karen Morgan donated £20 in lieu of sending Christmas cards; left at the Beacon Centre was a £100 donation from B. M. and M. E. Clark; and the centre also raised a further £103.55, mostly in 5ps.

The £180 from Chard and District Darts League consisted of entry fees, donations and contributions following a competition in memory of Shane Goodall.

And there was £110 from Sue Oxley and Janet Govier from a bingo night at Rockwell Green Village Hall.

The weekly total of £2,580.54 means the amount raised since SURE linked up with the County Gazette stands at £736,507.76.
