MYSTERY surrounds the ownership of two horses spotted "running around Taunton town centre all night".

Motorists had to slow down to avoid the animals as they troted up and down Toneway.

Joshua-Paul Enright tweeted: "Anyone lost 2 horses in Taunton? Both been running around the town centre all night, please give it a share."

He added: "The police called me thinking that they were mine as they were running up and down the Toneway dual carriage.

“I was going to have them back at my address but the police couldn’t get hold of me quick enough so found some local stables to look after them I believe.”

Mr Enright said one of the horses had a rug on and had front shoes. The sex is unknown but the horse is dark brown.

The other one is a coloured and is a mare without shoes or a rug.”

A spokesman for Horse Watch Avon and Somerset Constabulary said: "Two horses have been found running lose in the Toneway area of Taunton.

"The horses are safe and well but we now need to trace their owner.

"Anyone who thinks the horses may be theirs, or who has information about who they may belong to, is asked to call 101 and tell call handler you're phoning in relation to log 82 of today."
