PRIMARY school pupils were invited to Taunton Fire Station to take part in a road safety workshop.

The workshop, that took place for the first time at the station today (January 26), was sparked by the increased number of HGV vehicles on the road because of the construction of Hinkley Point C.

The workshop has been run by Somerset Road Safety since the influx was first noticed in Bridgwater, and is now being rolled out to the rest of Somerset.

Somerset County Gazette:

Neill Sedgwick delivering the workshop.

Neill Sedgwick, road safety coordinator, said: “Somerset Road Safety is part of the county council.”

“We provide talks to all age groups at schools throughout Somerset

“At this age group – key stage one or two, we are reiterating how to cross roads safely and the ‘Stop Look Listen and Think’.

“In partnership with Devon and Somerset Fire and with other haulage companies we are talking about being safe around those large trucks and buses."

The session saw the students, from Blackbrook Primary School, listen to a 20 minute informative presentation about road crossings, then a session outside learning about where they can and can't be seen when using a road near a large vehicle.

Kevin Stroger, watch manager, said: "This is the first session to take place at Taunton Fire Station.

"We work in partnership with Somerset Road Safety. We have lots of trucks here, so if we can help kids to be safe on the road, its a huge benefit."
