A HORSE has sadly died after it got stuck in a muddy field near Taunton.

Fire crews received a call at 9.14am today (March 18) saying a horse was stuck in a mud filled ditch in Trull near Taunton.

One fire engine from Taunton and a rescue team from Bridgwater attended the incident.

When crews arrived, the officer in charge confirmed a horse was stuck in a muddy field and began to liaise with the vet.

But despite their best efforts, the horse died before it was freed.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service, said:

"Crews made efforts to rescue the horse from the field but unfortunately the horse had to be euthanized by the vet in attendance.

"The care of this incident was handed over to the vet and the crews returned home station."
