WELLINGTON Carnival's Street Fair event is set to be extra special this year as a trio of fighter planes will pass over.

The RAF has agreed to fly the planes, an original Lancaster Bomber AND a Spitfire fighter plane AND a Hurricane fighter plane, better known as the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, over the event on June 3.

Louise Brierley, Wellington Carnival Committee, said: “I cannot put into words how ecstatic and grateful we are for the RAF to provide support to our event, especially as this year marks 100 years of the RAF. it promises to provide the climax of the day; I have lived in Wellington all my life, and cannot recall anything as special and unique as this happening in or perhaps 'above' our town.

"This is sure to capture the public’s attention and increase foot fall, so will help reward all those that support the event including the stall holders, volunteers, local businesses that open on the day and of course all the local entertainment groups that provide entertainment free of charge whilst also supporting the event”.

Only 20 spaces remain for stall holders. Organisers are encouraging hopefuls to get in touch sooner rather than later.

Chairman Dave Rylatt said: “I am delighted that Louise has managed to secure this; I know negotiations commenced with the RAF on New Years Day, and will continue up to the event taking place. One word of caution is that whilst the RAF have confirmed the booking, it is still subject to RAF operations coming together up to and including the event, and of course requires favourable weather conditions for it to happen.

"The fly past is due to take place early afternoon, but we will not receive confirmation until an hour before it takes place, so we will have to rely on announcements over the PA unit, and perhaps social media to keep people informed.”

A full schedule of events will be released nearer the time.

The fair is the main fundraiser for Wellington Carnival, which takes place on September 29.
