A UNION'S former regional HQ in the centre of Taunton could be converted into a 21-apartment development.

Windsor Properties (Taunton) has applied for planning permission to change the use of the former UNISON building in The Crescent from offices to residential.

The company then hopes to win approval to build five two-bedroomed apartments in the existing three-storey main building.

And it also wants to construct new premises housing 16 homes in two three-storey blocks on the current car park and on the site of some single-storey buildings it plans to demolish.

The 19th Century building was bought by Windsor Properties in mid 2017 after UNISON moved out.

A spokesman for Ian Collier Architects, which is acting for Windsor, said: "We are aware of the sensitive nature of the site and its immediate surroundings.

"The refurbishment of the existing building will leave this building unaltered externally."
