REVAMPED proposals for the regeneration of Watchet's East Wharf are to come under the spotlight once again at a public meeting of the town's new conservation society tonight, Wednesday.

Controversial plans for the £12 million scheme were put on hold in May after people attending a previous public meeting complained that the proposed building was too big; that inappropriate materials were proposed; and that the development would do little to attract tourists to the town.

It was also claimed that a proposed boat storage area in Harbour Road was unworkable.

The revised scheme is restricted to the East Wharf site and East Pier, with Harbour Road no longer part of the development. Instead, a boat storage area has been created on the wharf to the rear of the development.

Watchet Boat Museum, previously offered an alternative space in the new building, will now stay in its current building in Harbour Road.

The design still incorporates the replacement of the existing harbour master's office and Quay West Radio building.

A landscaped roof terrace will connect the marina with the platform of Watchet Station.

A bistro, meeting room, tourist information centre, offices for Watchet Town Council, commercial and retail units have all be retained.

A planning application for the scheme, a joint project between West Somerset Council and developers Urban Splash, is expected to be submitted to the council's planning committee this week.

Sam Westmacott, a founding member of the new Watchet Conservation Society, said: "The new building is worse than that proposed before.

"There's a lot of bad feeling in Watchet at the moment. Some are saying we've got to put up with the development and that if we stop this we'll end up with nothing."

Molly Quint, chairman of Watchet Chamber of Trade, said: "We want a development to go ahead as long as it is sympathetic with its surroundings.

"Timber cladding will be used on the new frontage to make it more complementary to the area."

The meeting of the conservation society takes place at the Esperanza restaurant, Market Street, Watchet starting at 7.30pm tonight, Wednesday.

Regarding the revamped proposal for the East Quay; the biggest tourist attraction in the area - The West Somerset Railway - is STILL being ignored.
How many extra jobs will this proposal bring.

That's the revamped version? It's worse than the first one! It's not in keeping with the surrounding area, does nothing for the historic West Somerset Railway and Watchet itself - it's supposed to be an Ancient Harbour, and that's what tourists go there to see surely? Come on, Urban Splash, have you been to Watchet to sample its atmosphere? Have you spoken to the residents? Please think again. I think you'll find most are not against development and improvement, but when it looks like this, I think you'll find you're missing the mark completely.

The development looks absolutly hideous and does nothing but turns Watchet into an urban sprawl. It does not fit in with the image of a historic harbour or the West Somerset Railway, which brings in far more visitors. Would these visitors ever be tempted to visit Watchet with this eyesore of a development? I doubt it somehow!

I overlook the Marina and this development will be right in front of me. Whilst I know we have to have something there I am sure they could have done something a little bit more pleasing to the eye. When I applied for planning I was made to have the conservation officer from SCC visit the site and was told that the building had to be of the same materials as the property alongside as it was in a conservation area. So is the East Quay but the materials to be used are nothing like the buildings behind it or indeed on the Esplanade. In fact there are no buildings in Watchet that are anything like proposed. I am not against new or innovative but why are there rules for the public and not for developers and councils? We have been told that our buildings are wonderful and aesthetically pleasing to the eye but when you stand on the West Pier in future you will no longer see all of them. If you stand on the East Quay you will see none of them. How sad! Also no-one has shown what the back of the buildings will look like from the railway side.

An eyesore, totally out of place in Watchet, this can't be allowed, only when they come up with something in keeping with the surroundings and is acceptable to the people of Watchet should it go through, let the people of Watchet come up with designs!

Wazza has got the right idea. Let the residents of Watchet come up with the design. How about the people who recently attended the Conservation Meeting recently? I know for a fact that there were some suitably qualified architects who were at that meeting who could come up with an aesthetically pleasing design that would tick all the right boxes. This Urban Splash design would look great in Milton Keynes or London, but completely out of place in Watchet.

Once again some radical designer comes up with an outrageous design, then some disconnected people propose it without a single thought to what effect it will have on the existing population. For heavens sake - will the planning committee *THINK* about the peopl, businesses and organisations who are already there. It happens all over the place. The designer will get an award and then the result is a hideous eyesore. STOP before you turn this area in to folly. Consider your fellow human beings who will have to live with it both during its construction and after - and remember the railway - the one major tourist attraction that brings well over 100,000 visitors PLUS to this area... If you hurt them - you basically stab in the back one of your major attractions. Go back and look at this with a rational eye not a glassy one.

This is not about jobs or doing what’s best for the town, its only about money. West Somerset Council are short of cash to run the Council and the East Wharf project will bring in hundreds of thousands of pounds. They don’t care about destroying the tourist trade or the long term future of Watchet. How did these clowns ever get to be councillors?
