A PINNACLE on the roof of the chapel at Wellington School had to be removed as it was in danger of crashing down to the floor.

The state of the pinnacle was discovered during restoration work at the place of worship constructed in memory of former students who died in the First World War.

The windows of the building overlooking the sunken garden had been completed before surveyors noticed that the pinnacles were in a bad state of repair, while the window over the altar also needs to be restored.

Old Wellingtonians chairman Caroline Hewton said: "The school has received quotes to do this important work and the total amount required for both the pinnacles and the window is £36,000.

"The chapel fund currently has £21,000 and we are keen to raise the final £15,000 to allow the school to carry out the work this summer.

"It would be wonderful to have the chapel restored to its former glory in time for the Old Wellingtonians Association reunion weekend in November when we will mark the anniversary of the end of the First World War.

"The chapel will obviously feature heavily in the weekend as the commemorative building to those pupils who lost their lives in the war."

The OWA has started an online donation campaign through Virgin Giving in an effort to raise the money.
