RESIDENTS are being invited to have their say on how Minehead should look as design ideas are revealed.

Ideas for Minehead’s Eastern Esplanade improvements, which could cost up to £320,000 will be on view to the public later this month.

Minehead’s Coastal Communities Team (MCCT) is keen to gauge opinion on the emerging themes and concepts following consultations with interest groups, businesses and individuals earlier in the spring.

MCCT, the organisation that has the funding to spend, is inviting people to come forward and have their say before any 'hard and fast' decisions are made.

The initiative aims to change the perception of the town, through the physical re-development of a designated area on the Eastern Esplanade.

The project will involve new landscaping and developing concepts to attract people using the themes of light and play to maximise interest.

The group says the aim is to attract new customers, increase the amount of time and money spent by visitors to make sure the town remains competitive as a destination and meets the needs and expectations of the 21st century.

An initial consultation was held in early April and feedback from that has helped to shape the next stage of consultation that will run from May 29-June 17 at Minehead’s Tourist Information Centre during its opening hours: Tuesday - Saturday 10am – 4pm and Sunday 11am – 4pm.

Katrina Midgley, chairman of Minehead CCT, said: “This project started more than two years ago and I am delighted to see it finally coming to fruition.

"The public response to the recent consultation has not only helped to formulate the current proposals, but has also given us some great ideas for future phases.”

Cllr Andrew Hadley, whose West Somerset Council portfolio includes economic regeneration and tourism, said: “I really do want to encourage people to come along, get involved and share their thoughts. We value their input and hope they will take the time to visit and to provide their feedback.”

Some 395 questionnaires from the first session were returned and the organisers would like to thank everyone who took part and took the time to respond.

The budget for the Eastern Esplanade infrastructure totals £320,000 with the money coming from the Hinkley Point C Community Impact Mitigation (CIM) fund.

Details of the consultation can be found on MCCT’s website.
