FIREFIGHTERS have issued a warning after youngsters were caught starting a deliberate fire involving a large quantity of aerosol cans.

This morning (Saturday, June 16) Minehead firefighters were called out to Hopcott Combe following reports that youngsters had started the fire and were deliberately chucking in aerosol cans in the hope of generate small explosions.

A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "Apart from the obvious danger they are putting themselves at if the explode, they also put other members of the community at risk and indeed firefighters who attempt to deal with it.

"This is not an attempt to stop young people enjoying their spare time - this is seriously dangerous."

However instead of taking heed of the advice offered by the firefighters, the youths were 'rude and obstructive' when challenged by both members of the public and fire crews.

Somerset County Gazette:

Police have now been informed and enquiries will be made to any potential offences that may have been committed.

Setting fire to anything on other people's property is arson and an offence.

Exposing Firefighters or the public to unnecessary risk as a result of arson is even more serious.

In some circumstances a custodial sentence in a young offenders institute and a lifetime criminal record can be imposed by the courts.

The Minehead Fire Station spokesman continued: "In recent years in North Somerset, two lads playing with ‘one’ aerosol can resulted in an explosion.

"One lost most of his hand and the other was seriously injured.
Sadly an innocent mother and baby who were nearby and were seriously injured when the fireball exploded.

"If anyone knows who these individuals are please please reiterate the risks they are placing themselves and others at risk."
