I HOPE the miserable man from Cotford St Luke who wrote a few weeks ago saying he could see nothing good about Taunton was in the town on Saturday.

Well done to those who organised Somerfest.

For its size and wealth Taunton is a great place to live and shop.

Vivary Park (one of the very best municipal parks you will find anywhere), Somerset cricket, Taunton football and rugby all excelled of late, the Tone is kept beautifully (well, except for the plastic garden by Somerset Square), Musgrove, Brewhouse, Mary Magdelene Church and St James’ Street shops are gems, the flowers around the town in the summer months, good shopping with comparatively few empty shops, clean streets, two excellent bookshops (no, I don’t mean WH Smith!), some excellent clothes shops (both up and down-market), the vast majority of cyclists on the towpaths are considerate and polite and it is a great pleasure to walk by the river and canal.

The list is endless.

Taunton is a lovely place. Smell the roses.
