IT was a great day at Vivary Golf Club last Friday, as they held their annual Pro-Am Charity Day in aid of the British Heart Foundation, kindly sponsored by Dave Penny of Invest SouthWest. 

Twenty-two teams took part, on what was a perfect day for golf.
Wessex Golf Centre’s Michael Watson scored 59 to record his second win of the season.

Professional individual event winners: 1 Mike Watson (Wessex Golf Centre, 59); 2 Scott Drummond (Acat Building Services, 60); 3 George Ryall (Worlebury Golf Club, 61).

Team event winners: 1 Team Topper (Mike Watson, Gary Taylor, Lee Taylor, Colin Murphy, 96); 2 Acat Building Services (Scott Drummond, Lee Stanley, N Willet, G Brooks, 90); 3 m&j Meats 1 (Gareth Bennet, Pete Cridge, Kevin Cridge, N Cobb, 89).

The ladies’ team, comprising professional Eugenie Knight, Ruth Crooks, Jo Evans and Dale Knight, came a very credible sixth with 87 points.

TAUNTON & Pickeridge Golf Club hosted the St Margaret’s Hospice Cup competition on Saturday, with almost 120 players competing in three divisions.

In the top division it was Kevin Gidley, with a nett 67, who was the winner, two ahead of Neil Shattock who claimed second place on countback, as both he and third-placed Keith Welsher returned with 69.

Division 2 was won by John Godley with 67, but only after countback put him ahead of second-placed Mark Coleman, while Keith Rees was third with 69.

In the third flight it was Bob Stenhouse who claimed the honours with 70, Steve Durston was second and Martin Hogan third, both having scored 73.

On Monday evening, Bailey Langford, with a nett 67, was the winner of the T&P Juniors’ competition that was played in tough, windy conditions. 

Second place went to Charlie Hooper with 77, while third was Dillon Watts with 83.

On Tuesday, the Ladies’ Section also played a St Margaret’s Hospice Stableford, at the end of which it was Jacky Ford with 35 points who was the winner in the Silver Division.

Jenny Scobie was awarded second spot on countback from Ali McGowan after both scored 33.

In the Bronze Division, Margaret Nation won with 40 points, ahead of Marlene Ewens and Heather Crump, both returning with 34.

The nine-hole Stableford was won by Chrys Maltby with 16 points, three ahead of Susan Gawne-Caine with 13.

The Stableford competition raised £43 for St Margaret’s Hospice.

OAKE Manor Golf Club held their Club Championship last weekend, where 80 men and 10 ladies played two rounds of golf.

On day one, James Ward scored a gross 71 to be in the lead by one shot from Kobe Adams. 

On day two, Ward scored a gross 73 and a total of 144 to win the Championship by one shot from James Macey in second place with 145, and third-placed Kobe Adams, also on 145.

James Macey was the clear winner of the nett Championship with nett 133, 7-under par for the two rounds, Phillip Troake (nett 138) came second and James Ward (nett 138) third. 

Jane Clist won the Ladies’ Championship for the ninth time with a gross 166 for her two rounds; Kathryn Loader (172) was second and Natalie Lawrence (172) third.

Suzanne Reed won the Ladies’ Nett Championship with nett 149, narrowly beating Angie Warnes (nett 150), with Jane Clist (152) third.

Phil Troake won the Barbara Sadler Plate for the best nett score of the second round, nett 66.

Alison Harman won the Eileen Scragg Salver on Tuesday by winning Division 1 with 40 points. Sue Corlett was second in Division 1 with 30 points, Rosemary Webber third with 29 points and Janet Howe fourth, also with 29 points. 

Patricia Brown won Division 2, scoring 37 points; the next three players all had 35 points but on countback Karen Mackenzie was second, Pat Snelling third and Pip Verge fourth.
