STUDENTS from a Taunton primary school took part in a walk in order to relate to refugees fleeing war-torn countries.

More than 220 pupils and teachers from St George's Catholic School took part in the mile-long walk through Vivary Park on Friday, June 22.

They carried backpacks around as they contemplated the life that the refugees have.

Deputy headteacher Damien Lake said: "So how do you inspire over 220 children and teachers? You tell them a story about refugees and all the problems they have faced.

"But to make it more real, a one mile walk around Vivary park with their rucksacks and some food and water.

"The children stopped four times on the walk to hear different stories of a refugee’s journey and the struggles they faced.

"The school said prayers for them and took time to reflect. They then walked along upper high street, back into the park and finished back at school."

They took part in the walk as part of the Catholic Agency for Overseas Development's (CAFOD) 'share the journey' campaign.

Mr Lake added: "CAFOD is asking schools, church groups or just friends to collectively walk around the world (24,900 miles) and sign cards to send to our government.

"The cards ask government to do more for refugees and migrants; to protect children, the elderly and disabled people. To continue to offer humanitarian aid in the developing world and to keep families together."
