TEN thousand tyres and 8,000 litres of fuel and oil were set alight in a 'deliberate' fire in Castle Cary.

Fire engines from Castle Cary, Shepton Mallet and Wincanton went to the incident off of Torbay Road in Castle Cary at 2.30pm today (July 1) following a number of calls from the public.

When crews arrived they requested for an additional three pumps to be sent to the scene.

Firefighters confirmed 8 x 30ft containers containing approximately ten thousand tyres were involved in fire along with 8000 litres of fuel and oil.

At 3.07pm crews requested further resources.

Firefighters are currently fighting the fire using three main jets, compressed air foam and eight breathing apparatus.

At 6.30pm crews were scaling down to two pumps and relief crews were being sent from Yeovil and Chard.
