A MAN killed in an alleged stabbing in Yeovil has been named by police as officers are granted more time to question the murder suspects.

While the man has not yet been formally identified, Avon and Somerset Police believe the victim was 33-year-old Joseph Jennings, from Yeovil.

Detectives from the force’s Major Crime Investigation Team continue to investigate the death of a man in Yeovil on Saturday (July 14).

Police say they were called to Great Western Terrace by the ambulance service at about 11.15pm after a man was found with stab wounds in the stairwell of a block of flats.

His next of kin have been informed and are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers.

A forensic post-mortem examination carried out on Sunday confirmed the cause of death as stab injuries.

Detective Inspector Mike Buck said: “We’re continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Joe’s death and our thoughts are very much with his family at this distressing time.

“We understand this is a concerning time for the local community and I’d like to reassure people that while we are in the early stages of our investigation, we believe this to be an isolated incident involving people known to each other.

“However, neighbourhood officers will continue to conduct additional patrols over the coming days and members of the public are encouraged to talk to them if they have any particular worries.

“We have three men in custody in connection with incident and we have until tomorrow afternoon to question them after we successfully obtained a warrant of further detention this morning.”
