Who do you think should win the Gazette Readers choice’ certificate?

You might have noticed some colourful additions to the town centre streets in Taunton over the past week or two.

Well Yarn bombing (or yarnbombing) is a type of street art that employs colourful displays of knitted or crocheted yarn or fibre rather than paint or chalk.

It is also known as yarn storming, guerrilla knitting, kniffiti, urban knitting, or graffiti knitting.

Like graffiti that comes from a spray can it can vary greatly in style, aesthetics, and meaning.

At the moment you can see amazing examples of this unusual art activity at over 16 different locations with numerous local groups participating and judges awarding Prizes for the best Yarnbombing display, Highly Commended and other categories.

Independent Creative judges, Pat Mayhew, Jonet Middleton and Philippa Reid got together and visited all the displays to come up with this year’s winners.

The judges deliberated but after a few quibbles all agreed that Note-Orious Music with their ‘Underwater’ theme should win first prize, Silver Street Baptist Church second and Priorswood Community Centre ‘Priorswood in Bloom’ to win third. Displays will be up throughout July and there is still time to vote for the “People’s choice” award. After visiting the sites why not vote using the slip on this page and drop your choice into the Taunton visitors Centre. Don’t forget that some of the displays continue inside some of the participating venues.
