VILLAGERS in Doniford were shocked after a van caught fire which saw black smoke billowing into the air.
Firefighters from Minehead were called out the scene on Normandy Avenue in Doniford at 1.20pm.
On arrival the crews found the fire had spread to a second van parked next to it, and that the fire was close to a canister of liquefied petroleum gas. or LPG.
Neighbours gathered down the street as the fierce blaze took hold, while black smoke that could be seen over a mile away billowed over the quiet village.
A spokesman for Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue said: "The crews put the fire out using one hose reel jet with two firefighters wearing breathing apparatus, and one compressed air foam jet."
The team rescued a dog and administered oxygen therapy to it using one of thier specialist dog masks.
A man suffering from smoke inhalation was also given oxygen therapy and an ambulance was requested to attend.
The fire caused severe damage to the two vans and also affected a nearby garden hedgerow.
The fire service confirmed that the cause of the fire was deemed as accidental ignition.
